This recipe is a cherished family favorite that originated from my grandmother's kitchen. It marries Cajun cuisine flavors with Southern comfort food in a way that feels both familiar and exciting.
Ingredients
Scale:
10 large cabbage leaves
1 pound beef sausage, diced
1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 medium onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup cooked rice
2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
1 cup tomato sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the cabbage by removing the core and carefully separating 10 large leaves. Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then blanch the leaves for 2-3 minutes until they are slightly tender. Remove and set aside.
In a skillet over medium heat, add olive oil. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add the diced beef sausage to the skillet and cook for an additional 5-6 minutes until browned.
Stir in the shrimp, cooking until they turn pink, about 3-4 minutes.
Mix in the cooked rice and Cajun seasoning, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste.
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a baking dish by spreading half of the tomato sauce on the bottom.
Take a cabbage leaf, spoon a generous amount of the filling into the leaf, and roll it up tightly, tucking in the sides. Place the roll seam-side down in the baking dish. Repeat until all leaves are filled.
Once all rolls are in the dish, pour the remaining tomato sauce over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes to allow the top to brown slightly.
